Stopping to Smell the Flowers 09.02.2010

Excerpts from my Google reader~it’s like settling down to read a good book that’s never ending, as I always find something inspiring, thought provoking or just plain funny.

I’m really eager for fall weather.  I love fall (hate winter).  If you’re one of the lucky ones that has a Magnolia tree in their yard..here is a great craft from Centsation Girl (easy to create) with your fallen Magnolia leaves. Love this.

Speaking of fall…it’s time to start thinking about some killer fall floral arrangements.  I’m loving the golden yellow blast you get from this combo and the slight accent of green that drapes at the base.  Great centerpiece for any table.

If you’re a vintage/antique junkie like I’m becoming..maybe you already know about this great event in September up in Shokopee, MN.  Maybe you don’t….get a load of Junk Bonanza and get September 16th or 17th or 18th on your cali as you need to peruse the hundreds of funky junk vendors participating!  I’m taking my mom!

Have a great week folks!

Not sure if you’ve got the memo yet….but wallpaper is back in baby!  And not like it was in the 80s…it’s soo much cooler today.  Design Sponge highlights on new designs from Hygge & West.

I think this is pure genius.   My Skinny Garden (aka Gina) interviews some of her fellow green-thumbers about their gardens!  It’s interesting to hear the struggles other gardeners go through…and their best advice.  The coolest though….the videos at the end of their gardens~Virtual Garden Tour. Genius.

I really wish Des Monies has something like this…workshops where I could get my hands dirty and learn how to create cool stuff at the same time (maybe I should start something).  Check out this DIY Staghorn Workshop where natural creativity steals the show!

Bachman’s Nursery~the Pretties

I recently raved about Bachman’s recent journey into the vintage world.  (what I’d give to live there…in Bachman World)  Here’s a gander into the what makes their garden centers so fun to shop….

I’m currently trying to grow the Ponytail Fern….really trying.

HOT PAPAYA! You may have heard about the latest Coneflower introduction.  I was excited to see such a nice/full bloom.

I flock to Hydrangeas…and it’s no surprise I liken a snapshot of this Pinky Winky Hydrangea tree on standard. Want one!!

Intriging display gardens.

Ginormous succulents!

Can’t handle a super-sized garden?  Get yourself a terrarium with mini garden accessories.

Two things I love here….the arrangement in the birdbath (genius use for an outdated birdbath) and the wooden shelving in the background.

Time to throw out the ol raggedy deer you got from the boxstore, get yourself this natural, carefully crafted garden piece.  How unique would that be?

Speaking of unique…think I could maintain this creature?

Could you?

Have you been to Bachman’s yet?  What’s your favorite part?

Stopping to smell the flowers 08.12.10

Generally speaking…I have a hard time reading a blog post if it doesn’t have pictures….as if I was a third grader.  I need those eye rests.  However~I’ve recently started following Paige Worthy on twitter and have taken a liking to her blog~PaigeWorthy.com (pretty easy to remember).  She’s sassy, tells a great story, and I’m quick to turn every page.

In the garden the Japanese Beetles are killing me!  Killing you and you probably don’t even know it!  (not literally killing you) My garden looks horrible thanks to these beasts!  Eric Liskey from Better Homes and Gardens shares his remedy for this Garden Warfare.

When is the last time you went to the Des Moines Botanical Center?  I applaud Garden Mom and thank her for giving me a Wordless Wednesday glimpse at the garden wonders at the center as I haven’t been in eons!  I mean eons.  Time to plan a trip.

Have a great weekend Grunts.

LIVE VIDEO: DIY Backyard Oasis~on the GardenGrunt show

Last Tuesday I was fortunate enough to have some great people in the Worldwide Amplified studio with me:

Chris Juhl brought some killer BBQ from Jethros located in the Drake neighborhood.  If you haven’t been there yet…I strongly suggest you partake in the wings. (along with the rest of the awesome menu).

Alexson and Paul Calahan came with their personal DIY expertise after creating a backyard retreat worth major bragging rights.  See how they re-invented their dilapidated deck and added a patio and landscape.

Take a listen to the Garden Grunt show where you’ll hear how Alexson and Paul shed blood, tears..and probably a few beers on their DIY project.

Untitled from GardenGrunt on Vimeo.

During this episode, we discuss using polymeric sand on your patios.  Learn more about its benefits here.

Happy Planting….and grunt work

I laughed out loud at this. You will too. Read how Jeff Fisher lost his tonsils (at least that’s how I see it…what do you think?)

This should have been part of my “I WANT Wednesday” series (of which I neglected yesterday).  Meet Des Moines local artisan Calee Himes.  What I WANT is a coffee cup that says “Good Morning” to me….in the morning.  Sometimes I need that.  Don’t forget to visit her Etsy shop.

I’m a big fan of Allison’s blog theme here…..A Tasteful Garden.  I’m particularly fond of her daily photo series with their informational tags~my favorite so far? This one…from Stowe, Vermont

Got a garden to be proud of?  Take a snapshot and submit it to Better Homes & Gardens photo contest!  Prizes up to $5000! Think of what you can do with that kind of cash! Good luck!

DIY Patio Installation~on the GardenGrunt show

Today at 6pm CST on the Garden Grunt Show Alexson and her hubs are joining me to talk about their DIY patio…deck….landscape adventure! Here’s a sneak peek at the final project.

What I really want to pick their brains about is how they decided to go with a patio versus a deck, what thought was put into the shape/design/paver color, how much planning was done versus just doing…..etc.  What advice for fellow DIYers do they have.

If you’ve got questions for your own project..bring em! And before tonight’s show cruise on over to Alexson’s blog…it’s a must read.  I love the title…. Bigger, Better, Best. Plus she’s sassy.  Nuff said.

See ya tonight at 6!

Stopping to smell the flowers 07.30.10

Excerpts from my Google reader~it’s like settling down to read a good book that’s never ending, as I always find something inspiring, thought provoking or just plain funny.

A couple weekends ago I traveled up to Minneapolis.  I LOVE Minneapolis. While there, I forced the hubs to go tiquing…I’d been dying to check out….in real time…Round Barn Potting Company in Andover.  I LOVE Lori’s style.  Here’s a sneak peek…but be sure to check the rest of it.

A DIY project to be jealous of….see how Angela turned her backyard into an oasis.

And finally….got a dream?  I do. If YOU do, here’s your chance to bring it to life.  My Entre Net has got a killer contest supporting Iowa entrepreneurs.  Fly over to AdMavericks and tell your story. Do it. NOW.

This is great…but I’d add just one thing

This is a great patio…I LOVE the New York Blue flagstone.  I LOVE the natural look the wood brings into the space.  And I LOVE the softness the ferns bring to the upper left pocket.

The only thing…and I truly mean the only thing I would make sure to add to this patio is polymeric sand.  Not only would polymeric sand add a barrier against nasty weeds, but it will stay put whereas regular sand is liable to shift, wiggle out from the cracks.  Wiggling is more of an issue with flagstone when there are such wide gabs between the pieces.

There is a technique to applying polymeric sand….catch the video below.  And lastly, just know that there are different grades of polymeric sand that correlate to what type of materials you’re using for your patio or pathway, make sure to ask questions before purchasing.

Happy Planting…..or Hardscaping…

Stopping to Smell the Flowers 07.22.10

Excerpts from my Google reader~it’s like settling down to read a good book that’s never ending, as I always find something inspiring, thought provoking or just plain funny.

Throughout the blog-o-sphere there are several writers that honor the “Wordless Wednesday” tradition (I am not one…am trying a Wednesday Wants instead as I’m childish like that). Generally speaking a “Wordless Wednesday” post is composed of just a picture. This one from Lisa’s Retro Style got my attention…

Lately floral prints, unique textiles have been intriguing me…particularly the blue shades within these pillow combos form Paper Cloud.

Who doesn’t LOVE JCrew?  And who HATES their price tags?  Jessica Hills is sewing her way around burning a hole in her pocketbook by creating her own artistic tees.

Black is the new…….well Black.  If you’re looking for a gothic twist to your garden check out how Bren is bringing glam to her garden.

Happy Planting Folks!
